Temper Tantrums
Preventing tantrums:
• Ensure your child is getting regular food and rest
• Pay attention to your child’s tolerance for stimulation
• Help your child get rid of extra tension by running, jumping, or
dancing to music
• Change activity of there are early warning signs
• Give limited choices as often as you can
• Choose your battles wisely
• Acknowledge your child’s feelings
Handling tantrums:
• Stay calm. Use a soft firm voice
• Provide a safe environment
• Do not give into your child’s wants or offer a reward for stopping
• Let the tantrum run its course
• Ignore the tantrum, stay calm
After the tantrum is over:
• Allow emotions to settle
• Offer support such as a wordless, comforting hug
• Help your child make amends
• Move on
